This course provides an introduction to constitutive models for describing nonlinear material behaviour in a phenomenological manner at the macroscopic level. In particular, constitutive models based on plasticity theory, on the theory of continuum damage mechanics and on combinations of both theories will be presented. Whereas the theory of plasticity allows considering irreversible (plastic) deformations, the theory of continuum damage mechanics allows describing the degradation of material properties due to propagation and coalescence of micro defects. By combining the theories of plasticity and continuum damage mechanics, both irreversible (plastic) strains and the degradation of the elastic stiffness can be described. Applications of the mentioned theories will be presented ranging from simple elastic-plastic material models for ductile materials like steel to advanced constitutive models for concrete and partially saturated soils.
