The lecture will provide mathematical tools for the numerical solution of conservation laws (which are nonlinear hyperbolic differential equations). In the first part, we will give an overview of the mathematical theory of conservation laws. In particular, we will discuss shock formation, rarefaction waves and the general solution of Riemann problems.
