The interfaculty lecture series uses examples to illustrate how the topic “Data Overload and Information Channels” is approached by different disciplines. The objective of the course, together with the “Medientag”, is to train the students in the field of media, communication, and media socialization.

In recent years the production, distribution and storage of data has grown immensely. In fact, in just one minute, more than 200 million e-mails are sent, 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube, over 100,000 tweets are sent, 920 new blog postings are published on Wordpress, and 240,000 photos are posted on Facebook worldwide.

In this flood of data, to what extent do (which) media (still) act as a gatekeeper? How do users deal with all the data at their fingertips? What guidance is being offered? And how does (“big”) data become knowledge? In the lecture series these and many more questions will be presented and discussed, based on very different examples.

The “Medientag” (20.11.2013) serves as a platform for case studies, current projects, and theoretical conceptualizations regarding the issue “Anker, Schleusen, Netze – Medien in der Datenflut”.

Lecture and presentation, discussion.

Written exam.

Will be discussed in the first lesson.
