800601 Science bears responsibility
winter semester 2014/2015 | Last update: 05.01.2015 | Place course on memo listThe course aim is a general introduction to discussions on the role and commitments of science and research in modern societies. This implies specifically an introduction to the fundamentals of the philosophy of science as well as to the ethics of research.
Based on case studies from the history of science as well as from recent developments, and referring specifically to research on climate change and to medical research, the question will be addressed how science is related to societal concerns, i.e. what it can achieve and what it is supposed to do eventually for the wider public.
As the relationship between science and society underwent considerable changes during the last few decades, this will finally lead to a discussion of the norms governing scientific research, where these norms comprise methodological as well as ethical commitments.
