Basic knowledge of sources for the social and political history and the capapility in reading them with a source-critical approach.

Household and family is the most important basic unit of a society, and this is especially true for the ancient societies. According to which principles are these groups organized, how are they interconnected? How does their role in society, in the poleis, in the res publica look like? Social practices and festivals, gender-specific interaction are treated as well as the socio-political impact of Greek and Roman families!

Lecture and presentation of facts, results of research and scholarly debates, discussion and collaborative critical analyses of sources.

Active participation, readings, regular and active participation in discussions, presentation and a paper.

Due to substantial differences in the allocation of ECTS-Credits in various curricula (BA Classica et Orientalia 2009/BA History 2009 and BA Classica et Orientalia 2015/BA History 2015), the requirements for this course vary. Information will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.
