640018 Ancient History II: Coins in Context - Coins as Vehicles for Imperial Communications. The Severan Dynasty
summer semester 2018 | Last update: 14.09.2023 | Place course on memo listThe students will acquire basic knowledge of the working methods in numismatics and of historical analysis of the images on the coins. Having attended this course, students should be able to deal with primary sources (coins) from the Roman Empire and secondary literature independently and to critically scrutinize the respective texts.
Based on analysing coins, the course will focus on the representation of the Severan dynasty. Furthermore, critical treatment of ancient texts and research literature will be practiced.
Coins from the Severan dynasty will be analysed, compared and discussed in detail; this will generate many insights into the representation of this family.
Active participation in the class, presentation of a seminar paper and submission of the BA thesis.
This SE is also valid as SE for the Bachelor Thesis for students of the BA History (2009) respectively as SE Advanced topics in Ancient History for students of the BA History (2015) as well as a Workshop including Bachelor Thesis (focus on Ancient History) for students of the BA CleO (2009).
The course instructor will inform the participants about the particular workload.
