613173 Specialised translation: literature, English-German
winter semester 2018/2019 | Last update: 07.02.2019 | Place course on memo listThis course will enable students to analyse a short narrative text from a translator's perspective, and to explain and justify their own translation strategies using relevant narrative theory.
Short mini-lectures about different aspects of narrative theory will equip students with the close-reading skills required for the analysis of a literary text which precedes the actual translation process. The newly acquired skills and theoretical knowledge will help students identify the particular challenges each individual text poses to the translator, develop adequate translation strategies, and give reasons for their translational choices.
Mini-lectures (given by the course leader); text analysis (in groups); production of draft translations (on an individual basis); discussion and revision of drafts (in class); individual feedback (provided by the course leader).
Two end-of-term tests (1. narrative theory and literary text analysis; 2. literary translation).
All course materials will be provided via OLAT.
Please note that this course is only recommended for native speakers of either German or English.
