The students know elementary content of hadith science and can present it as well as reflect it independently;

The students acquire basic knowledge about the origin of hadith as a religious source, the origin and development of hadith science, the hadith literature and the methods of hadith criticism.

The hadith, the transmission of the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad, is of central importance not only in Islamic law, but also in Muslims' beliefs, actions and thinking. The hadith science ('ilm al-hadith) is therefore a central theme of the classical Islamic sciences. This seminar will first give an overview of the chronological evolution of hadith, from the earliest oral prophetic sayings to canonical collections. This should be followed by an introduction to the science of the usūl al-hadith (methodology of hadith), which deals primarily with the question of the authenticity of the traditions.
