Students will be able to embed complex literary and cultural theoretical texts in their respective historical context, recognise the potential applications of theories to concrete literary works or cultural phenomena, assess the strengths and weaknesses of theoretical concepts, - also with regard to their personal research.

The course reflects on classics of modern literary and cultural theory (from the fields of formalism and structuralism, semiotics, postcolonial studies, spatial theory, etc.) as well as current positions of literary and cultural studies research in Slavic studies and other philologies. The research questions and interests of the students (especially in the context of seminar and Master's theses or individual projects) are decidedly in the foreground. The concrete programme of the course thus results from the individual concerns of the students in the first session.
