Students acquire
- knowledge of central positions from the philosophy of media and technology;
- the ability to apply these approaches to the conceptualization of media-technological developments of our present;
- a deepened understanding of the basic assumption of a non-neutrality of media and technologies.

How can "media" and "technology" be appropriately conceptualized philosophically? There are numerous proposals for this, whereby approaches in the philosophy of technology and in media philosophy are interwoven in a variety of ways: Media, for example, can be questioned in terms of their technical operation, and technologies, conversely, can be viewed as media of world-making. Both philosophical genres have in common that they abandon the instrumental understanding as a mere means to an end (in the case of technology) or as a neutral channel of communication (in the case of media) in favor of an exploration of the cultural shaping power (or also shapedness) of media and technologies. Classical approaches (e.g. by Marshall McLuhan, Martin Heidegger, Günther Anders, Vilém Flusser) as well as newer approaches (e.g. by Bruno Latour and Bernard Stiegler) will be presented.
