This lecture examines the complex interrelationships between Byzantine and Eastern European medieval sacred architecture and its accompanying decorative systems. In the formal organisation of their sacred spaces, the buildings form the matrix of sophisticated pictorial programmes and incrusting decorative systems. With their type-specific, but also individual, meaning-bearing understanding of architecture and the immanent expression of their function, they are coherent in terms of content and aesthetics with the pictorial and decorative systems anchored in them, which from autonomous images clinging to cult status to complex narrative structures of spread narrative cycles to complex geometric and ornamental paviments and wall incrustations strive to create a multi-layered liturgical world of encounter with the world of the sacred and metaphysical
