Borders fulfill both separating and connecting functions. They define domains of power, enable transfers, are contact zones or fulfill protective functions. The ambivalence of difference and encounter does not always produce conflict-free interactions. Taking into account written, visual and material sources, the phenomenon of the border and its significance for societies will be addressed in this course. We will ask how does a border emerge or change? How did border distinctions take place? How can border be perceived? Using selected Austrian case studies from the past and present, not only the political functions of borders but also their social and cultural dimensions will be discussed.
