Students acquire the instruments for understanding and evaluating different sources and media. They use their competences in critical use of media and sources and are able to use their source-critical skills for developing own questions.

Many sources for the Master's thesis are already available in digital form, for example newspapers, and in most archives you can now take almost unlimited photographs yourself (let it be diaries, letters, reports, administrative files, court files, ...). This not only brings the challenge of organising all the data material, but also leads to new questions that combine qualitative and quantitative analyses.

This is where the software "MAXQDA" comes into play: https://www.maxqda.com/de/ (Max as homage to the sociologist Max Weber and QDA for Qualitative Data Analysis). In the course, we will approach the possibilities of this programme step by step: consider how your own data can best be organised with it, which sources can be coded and analysed in what way, and which visualisation methods are available.

If you have already collected sources for the master's thesis, you work with them. If you are not yet so far, materials will be provided by the course instructor.

Introduction to the MAXQDA programme by the course instructor, working together and independently with the software, presentation of own projects.

Ongoing collaboration, preparatory exercises at home, presentation of your own project.

Support materials (descriptions and tutorials) are accessible on the MAXQDA website: https://www.maxqda.com/de/hilfe-mx20/willkommen
