Examination of different paradigms and patterns of interpretation in imperial history; deepened knowledge on the basis of recent syntheses
The global turn in historical scholarship owes essential impulses to the interest in the world’s seas as spaces of interaction and connection. This viewpoint has been pioneered by the so called “Atlantic History”. But other maritime macro-regions have been brought into focus, too, so that recently there is talk of “Oceanic Histories”. The tutorial first aims at characterizing the leading perspectives in this field in the light of approaches of comparative, transnational, transfer and entangled history. Furthermore, the theoretical knowledge will be deepened by examining the methodological and empirical features of studies on the early modern Atlantic and Indian Ocean.
Reading and discussion of theoretical literature and empirical studies; group work; presentations
Regular and active participation; presentations of research positions and case studies
