603835 VU Body Relations and Sex. Selected Examples: Power, Violence, Resistance
winter semester 2024/2025 | Last update: 11.11.2024 | Place course on memo listThe students are able to explain the historical and social embedding of the modern body-self relationship. They can show how gender and other social positions are literally embodied and incorporated. They are able to classify widespread theorizations about the relevance of the body in subjectification processes. The students can apply these competencies to selected examples.
In the seminar, the apparently self-evident sentence “I have a body” is going be historicized (see Sarasin 2001). With a focus on gender, we will work out how the modern western understanding of body management and body-related practices (health and fitness, self-tracking, self-optimization, body as representation of the self) have developed and how relevant categories of inequality are within this development. Various well-known theorizations of the relevance of the body and its conduct for subjectification processes are discussed (Foucault, Bourdieu, Butler) and an explicit (gender)theoretical view of body-self relationships is conveyed. On this basis, the seminar will work out what role the body-self relationship plays in political emancipation movements such as the feminist movement, the disability rights movement and the equal rights movement of Black and People of Color. The ambivalences of body politics and its implicit values of self-determination and autonomy are also critically discussed.
