The participants have acquired sound sociological knowledge about juvenile delinquency and how to deal with it and can apply this knowledge in theoretically well-founded professional discussions and analyses.

Juvenile delinquency is a phenomenon that is regularly discussed in the media and triggers public debates. Often an increasing brutalization of young people is assumed and lately for example, a lowering of the age of criminal responsibility is demanded. This seminar looks at the phenomenon of juvenile delinquency from different angles and develops a differentiated picture. Starting with clarifications of the term, the seminar will first deal with presentations and discussions of the phenomenon on the basis of available data. Special attention will be paid to causes and explanations of juvenile delinquency and to the question of which explanations are expressed in the actual handling of juvenile delinquency. Alternative forms of reaction will be examined in depth, as will the most severe form of reaction, juvenile detention. We are particularly interested in what expectations are placed on the various forms of response and what effects they actually have. In addition, selected offences and their occurrence will be discussed in detail.

Input from the seminar leader - including from research practice, preparatory literature study, group work and discussions, in-depth research by the students on a given topic with a short presentation and written paper.
