103278 Media Change between Disruption and Renewal
winter semester 2015/2016 | Last update: 22.02.2023 | Place course on memo listDisruptive innovation affects every part of society. It changes the economic, political and cultural conditions and consequently forces the sciences to revise established concepts and theories. Which kinds of conflicts arise and how can we deal with them? What future scenarios are conceivable and preferable?
Digital networking paves the way for disruptive technologies. A wave of innovations pervades the world and its transformative power seems to exceed the impact of the Industrial Revolution or the invention of the printing press. Concepts and orders prevailing over centuries are now being destabilized. Often, local behavioral patterns and business models are put into question.
Seemingly overnight, online services like Uber and Airbnb redefine the people-transport-business and revolutionize the way people travel. Journalism is not only confronted with pluralized and changing forms of public spheres but equally with the fact that Internet giants like Google and Facebook are collecting the majority of advertising revenues. The reproducibility of digital information threatens the established notion of property, whereas content-providers react with restrictive Digital-Rights-Management and streaming offers. Due to the increasing processes of automation of even cognitively sophisticated actions, the future of gainful employment seems uncertain.
Lecturers from various scientific backgrounds will discuss aspects of the topic. The “Medientag” is also part of the course.
