800607 Intercultural Communication
winter semester 2016/2017 | Last update: 05.02.2024 | Place course on memo listThe aim of this course is to enable the students to both define culture and understand its meaning on a micro- and macro-level within the realm of both intercultural communication and its multilingual frame. The students will be asked to reflect upon their own perceptions of culture and multilingualism will also be provided with new insights regarding intercultural and multilingual communication from a theoretical background and in practice.
In the globalised world, intercultural communication and multilingualism form the most vital part of every contemporary society. Even though the dynamics of communication and language processing are ever-changing, a culture is always based on fixed systemic factors (such as e.g. social, communicational, and moral/ethic rules, etc.).
This course aims at providing its participants with new insights using the resources of intercultural and multilingualism research and theory in order to open new horizons both for Erasmus and native Austrian students. What will be strived for in this course is to apply the theoretical knowledge in practice, thus opening our horizons and widening our awareness on different cognitive and other levels.
Blended learning: online assignments (OLAT), compulsory classes, presentation in class, and group work.
Weekly online assignments (OLAT), weekly workload diary, group project assignments, group presentation in class, and active participation in class.
The respective literature will be announced in the first class.
Please note that all classes will be held in English. Your level and command of English should therefore enable you to read academic literature in English as well as to compose weekly written assignments based on your reading assignments in English.
Please note that this course carries 7.5 ECTS (= 187.5 hours of workload in total) and that the students are supposed to complete the workload independently and on their own.
Please note that only 25 students per group will be accepted in the ICC course. Preference is given to exchange students, yet first come first serve. There is also a waiting list - the first 10 students on the waiting list will also be invited to the first session so that if someone decides to leave the course after the first meeting, the free spaces can be filled.
