800608 SE Citizenship as status and practice
winter semester 2016/2017 | Last update: 07.05.2018 | Place course on memo listThis module serves to widen the study programme and to acquire additional qualifications.
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the main research questions in the field of citizenship studies and to foster critical and reflective thinking.
This seminar introduces students to current debates in the field of citizenship studies. To critically engage with citizenship as an instrument to regulate inclusion and exclusion, we will first address theoretical perspectives on citizenship (like feminist citizenship studies) which highlight the contested character of citizenship, thereby uncovering its exclusionary foundation. We will then examine how global migration challenges established understandings of citizenship, looking at some of the proposed conceptual reformulations like global citizenship, postnational citizenship, and transnational citizenship. Next, we will discuss emerging approaches on citizenship as practice. This shift in the analytical perspective will allow us to focus on processes of enacting citizenship, e.g. in the context of the refugee protest movements.
The aim of this course is to gain an understanding of the multi-layered connotations of citizenship as status and practice, as well as to develop a critical appreciation of its contested character and embeddedness in political and academic debates.
