612026 VU Selected Areas of Eastern Europ./Central Europ. and Southeastern Europ. Cultures and Societies: On the Edge of Empires. Galicia in Polish, Ukrainian and Austrian Literature
winter semester 2023/2024 | Last update: 11.07.2023 | Place course on memo listYou have learned about the history, literature, and culture of Galicia and, in particular, traced the cultural interweaving processes in the region that link Polish literature with Ukrainian and Austrian literature. In addition, you have explored intertextual references and discussed important theoretical texts on postcolonial literary studies.
As part of the Polish partitions at the end of the 18th century, the Austrian Empire annexed formerly Polish-Lithuanian territories and named them the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. Due to its peripheral location and almost non-existent infrastructure, Galicia was quickly dubbed "Golicja i Głodomeria", meaning the "naked and hungry" kingdom. Situated on the edge of the empires, far from the capital Vienna and in close proximity to the Russian tsarist empire, Galicia was characterized by a unique and anything but frictionless constellation: German-speaking occupiers and with them Czech officials met the Polish, Ukrainian, Ruthenian and Jewish population.
In the course of the seminar we will try to understand how this special situation affected Polish, Ukrainian and Austrian literature and which images of Galicia have been conveyed in literature over the course of time. To this end, we will read texts from three centuries, including those by Joseph Roth, Rosa Pomeranz, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Rose Ausländer, Jan Lam, Ivan Franko, Bruno Schulz, Martin Pollack, Andrzej Stasiuk, Iurii Andruchovych, Olga Tokarczuk, and Natal'ka Sniadanko. All texts are available in the original and in German translation.
Flipped classroom - students prepare texts in self-study and work on assignments; classroom times are exclusively for plenary discussions and to clarify open questions. Literary and theoretical texts are used as preparatory materials, as well as short video lectures if required.
